President Benigno Semion C. Aquino III initiated the new system of education. This program requires all incoming students to enroll into two more years of Basic Education. The proposal aims to produce employable 18 years old high school graduates by giving them a longer time to study and master employable skills. The system aims to fully enhance and develop the students in order to be well prepared especially in emotional and cognitive aspects.
The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education six years of primary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship DepEd, n. The program was implemented during , resulting to an additional two years on the schooling of a student as a response to the 12 years of basic education. Although the K to 12 program will help improve the education system in the Philippines, it should be suspended. The K program, or the Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and secondary education, has been brought to attention since its first year of implementation. Critics say that its implementation could only worsen the issue on education in the country. Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a known critic of the program, said that the country appears to be unprepared for K due to inadequacy in resources, tools, classrooms, etc. However, although some people still cannot see its relevance, reforms in the educational system is very much needed in the country.
