It refers to the actual rebuilding of the south physically, economically and politically from the damage of the Civil War. It was an effort to rebuild southern states and also to restore the Union.
Slavery was indeed a very important topic during this time. Many of the reconstruction plans that were proposed required states to prohibit slavery in order to be readmitted to the union. When the Civil War ended in , there was no definite plan for reconstructing the Union. This was a Very serious matter. President Lincoln had begun thinking about this while he was in office. In he proposed his Ten Percent Plan. This policy would allow seceding states to return to the Union if ten percent of their prewar voters took an oath of loyalty to the Union and if the state would prohibit slavery.
They were still not considered equals by many whites in the South or in the North, thus would not be employed by them in other businesses. While they were free from slavery by all accounts it was a false freedom. For former slaves, the Reconstruction plan brought great promise for their individual rights, secured freedom and new opportunities. The Reconstruction period was initially designed by Lincoln to be a time of rebuilding the South. Reconstruction was to aid the South in rebuilding infrastructure damaged in the war but also to help people reconcile the cultural, social and economic changes that came with the end of slavery.
Reconstruction refers to the efforts made by the government to not only unify and rebuild relations between the North and the South but to also polish the depressing status of Black Americans. However the lack of political and social effort along with untreated economic wounds, halted Reconstruction, subsequently causing it to be unsuccessful for several reasons. This was an unexpected consequence for the president. Much of the Reconstruction lead to poor plans and corruption that tried to create a new form of Government that often mishandled the rights to uphold blacks newly found freedoms within the south and parts of the north.
