In addition to its role as a regulatory authority, the Natural Health Products Directorate's mandate was extended to support research and help bridge the gap in research-based knowledge on natural health products, as identified by the Standing Committee on Health's Advisory Panel on Natural Health Products. The objective was to contribute to improved knowledge of natural health products to enable Canadians to make informed choices about their safe and effective use. In support of this objective, the program focussed on four key areas: building research capacity, supporting quality research, developing partnerships and community infrastructure, and promoting knowledge transfer.
