For years now people have been fighting for equality in the workplace, in all its areas. Women fighting for the same wage as men. Ethnic people fighting for the same wage as white people. Throughout her book, Ehrenreich hits hard issues such as not so affordable housing and employee benefits. But Ehrenreich also touches on the very dicey topic of equality in the workplace. Ehrenreich uses her writing skills and her newfound knowledge to make her audience aware of the inequality in the standard workplace based on race and gender biases.

At one point in her career, Barbara Ehrenreich thought that it would be a good idea to get into the life of a person who works for the minimum wage and tries to live of it. As she went through her quest, Barbara met many people who were in fact, struggling. Unlike her, these people had to work multiple jobs, cut down their eating, live in terrible places, and just suffer all because of the lack of money and the need for as much of it as the could get. Some of these employees had others that they had to support, and some only needed to provide for themselves. Nonetheless, millions of people across the US are forced to work jobs where they are miserable in order to be able to give their families what they need, no matter what they have to give up in order to do so. She got her first job as a waitress at the local Waffle House. But it didn't.
Being working class members, people usually have problems about money. That is the reason why they need to have jobs or work more hours per week to have extra money, because money is never enough for working families. The first thing that working families need to face is that household fee.
Critical Response: Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich After reading about Ehrenreich's experience one of my first observations was that working a minimum wage job not only had a physical toll on your body but also an emotional toll. While working at both hotels Ehrenreich and her coworkers became emotionally numb to working. It was just a routine, they were going through the motions. Through her observations and her coworkers situations Ehrenreich found that a minimum wage job can barely support one or two people.
